An extension of TAICT's Tharahunise Project

 

The EcoGram Project is an extension of TAICT’s Tharahunise Project which was started in May 2016. The Tharahunise Project received positive feedback and encouragement from locals and Panchayat members from the target area including a request to expand waste management services to all 11 villages in Bettahalasur. TAICT also identified the need to set up comprehensive waste processing facility to accommodate waste from these 11 villages as well as to accommodate the rapid growth in residential complexes, factories and businesses in the area. The EcoGram Project seeks to establish a model gram, that secures wellbeing for its people by making them conscientious participants in resource recovery and management.

In order to accommodate waste from a significantly larger area, and noticing the need for solid waste management infrastructure in the area as well as the opportunity to create livelihood and enhance the value of waste as a resource, the EcoHub facility was conceived. The EcoHub will be essential for realising the waste management and soil conversion strategies by providing an operational facility which is accessible, organised and under professional management.

The EcoGram waste management services are currently collecting segregated waste from the Tharahunise and Agrahara villages, as well as from four ‘bulk generators’ in the area. We are averaging collection of 120kgs of dry waste and 80 kgs of wet waste every day and are looking to expand our services even further in the coming months. We will also be introducing alternative collection systems (community bins) and implementing learnings from the Tharahunise Project.

The EcoGram Project also includes a strategic plan to convert Eucalyptus plantations into either agroforestry models or Malabar Neem (Melia Dubia) plantations that will provide a comparable or better income to farmers and land owners, while replenishing soil fertility. Eucalyptus cultivation as an easy and quick source of income is major issue in this area as the trees spread very quickly and do not allow other plants to grow in the area. They also use up much of the water and nutrients of the soil and have a very low capacity to return these nutrients to the air and soil. At present, the agroforestry and Melia Dubia model are under proof of concept in the project area.

As part of it’s focus on water resource recovery, TAICT has brought together locals from the area and EarthCare, to restore the natural functions of this area’s lake ecosystem. The goal is to implement intelligent, sustainable and natural systems that will create an intensive wetland system for nutrient recycling and bio accumulation, which in turn can promote various traditional socioeconomic systems. The systems will include sewage treatment, restoration of the lake and its capacity to hold water, and creating a natural habitat for birds, reptiles and plants. At present, this proposal is under consideration with the concerned authorities.
